Spain and Walter Bowart stretch the capabilities of the photo-offset process by using slightly off-register red and blue plates to achieve a 3d effect on this classic (but uncredited) East Village Other cover from 1968.

Just heard that comix legend Spain Rodriguez passed away today. I’m on the road, but just want to say RIP. Thoughts are with his family. I’ll put together a bunch of posts tomorrow, but for the time being you can check out my previous posts of his artwork. And the photo above is from a studio visit I did with him at his San Francisco home a couple years ago — you can read that here
