An Phoblacht (1981)

The picket pictured here, was held last Sunday, March 1st, in Downing Street, London, to greet Brit premier Margaret Thatcher on her return from her US trip. The picket was in solidarity with the Armagh women and the H-Block blanket men, on the first day of Bobby Sands’ hunger-strike for political status.

Caption reads:

The funeral of Belfast Provisional spokeswoman Maire Drumm, who was assassinated by a squad of UDA/UVF gunmen in her hospital bed in north Belfast on October 28, 1976. Her husband Jimmy, second from left, shoulders the coffin while a Provisional IRA guard of honor fires a volley over it as part of the ritual of republican funerals. Jimmy Drumm, like his murdered wife, was a long-time Belfast republican and was one of the old IRA who joined the Provisionals after the split in late 1969.
