Helix (1969)

The following exchange of letters between Beatle John Lennon and John Hoyland, a young British radical, should help settle a lot of questions about the Beatles’ relationship to the cultural revolution and the movement. The dialogue appeared originally in the Black Dwarf, a revolutionary socialist biweekly published in England, shortly after the Beatles’ “Revolution” came out.

Tom Pickard was born in Newcastle in 1946. His father was a railwayman. As the bulge babies grew up through what pass for schools in the North East Tom was moved to the lowest stream of a secondary modern school. Since he received so little encouragement in school it was not surprising that he left with his friends at the age of fourteen. ‘Work was very scarce, but I enjoyed the dole, it gave me time to read and learn to see things to understand people better than if I had been doped by work.’

Another photo from the student strike at San Francisco State University in 1968 that I think was taken by Alan Copeland.

Police in action with 5-foot billyclubs; the photographer is about to be struck. San Francisco State University student strike, 1968.
The paper that I took this scan from (Black Dwarf out of England) doesn’t have any photo credits. I’m assuming this is either a Nacio Jan Brown or Alan Copeland photo but don’t hold me to it.
