The actual film, Water Time, is a piece of manic insanity, but I definitely recommend reading Weisbecker’s book, In Search of Captain Zero: A Surfer’s Road Trip Beyond the End of the Road. It’s one of my all-time favorites and one of the few which disappears every time I lend a copy to a friend.

The story follows Weisbecker as he winds his camper through Mexico and into Central America in search of his long-lost surfing and drug-running buddy. The tales of adventure on the road south are interspersed with hilarious reminiscences of years spent funding an endless summer of surfing by running increasingly larger shipments of marijuana during the 70s.

If, like me, you’re afflicted with a bad case of wanderlust and you also romanticize outlaw living, it will not disappoint.
