The Electric Prunes - Mass In F Minor (1968)
This is literally a psychedelic treatment of portions of a Roman Catholic mass sung in Latin.
David Axelrod conceived, wrote and arranged the album, which was thrust as a complete concept on The Electric Prunes, who already had two albums of original material under their belt. The lead track, Kyrie Eleison, was used in Easy Rider (I think in the brothel scene) and appears on the soundtrack to the movie, but the album otherwise flew under the radar.
Technically, the musicanship on this album is great, and while I can fully appreciate the blasphemy involved, I still find it to be unlistenable without heavy chemical assistance.
Sixties madness.
